What You Need for a Duplicate Title
- Application for Duplicate or Paperless Title (REG 227) — we provide and help complete this form.
- Valid photo ID — must match the name on the title.
- Current registration card — helpful but not required.
- Duplicate title fee — $26 DMV fee, plus our service fee (disclosed before we start).
How Long Until the New Title Arrives?
California typically mails duplicate titles within 15–30 business days. If you need to sell or transfer the vehicle before the title arrives, we can file the duplicate and process the transfer simultaneously — you don’t have to wait for the paper title to arrive.
What If the Title Has a Lienholder?
If there’s an active lienholder (bank or credit union) on the title, we can still process the duplicate, but the replacement title is sent to the lienholder, not to you. Once the loan is paid off, the lienholder will release the title and send it to you.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a duplicate title cost in California?
The California DMV charges $26 for a duplicate title. Our service fee is additional and disclosed upfront.
Can I get a duplicate title if the vehicle is registered to someone else?
Only the registered owner (or a person with notarized authorization from the owner) can request a duplicate title. If you bought a vehicle and the seller lost the title before transferring it, you’ll need the seller to request the duplicate, or we can process a transfer-and-duplicate combination.
What if I find the original after requesting a duplicate?
The original becomes void once you sign the duplicate application. Shred it — using the old title after a duplicate has been issued is considered fraud.
