General Questions
Are you the DMV?
No. San Diego Auto Registration is a privately-owned California DMV Business Partner, licensed under California Vehicle Code §11400 to process DMV transactions. The registration cards, plates, and stickers we issue are identical to those from a state DMV office. Services the DMV provides free may carry a service fee at our location.
Do I need an appointment?
No. Walk in during business hours — first-come, first-served. For complex cases, a quick call to (619) 466-6647 before you visit can save a return trip.
How long do transactions take?
Simple renewals: 10–15 minutes. Title transfers: 20–30 minutes. Out-of-state and salvage: 30–60 minutes. Bonded and miscellaneous originals: may require follow-up visits.
What payment methods do you accept?
Cash, debit cards, and all major credit cards. DMV fees and our service fee are shown separately before you pay.
Do you speak Spanish?
Yes. Spanish-speaking staff is available during business hours. Hablamos español.
Fee Questions
How much does DMV registration renewal cost?
California renewal fees typically range from $60 to $400+ depending on your vehicle’s value and age. Your renewal notice shows the DMV total. We add a flat service fee disclosed upfront. See our registration renewal page for a full fee breakdown.
How much does a title transfer cost?
The California DMV title transfer fee is $15, plus 7.75% use tax on the purchase price in San Diego County. Late transfer penalties apply if filed more than 10 days after sale. See our title transfer page.
Why is there a service fee on top of DMV fees?
California law allows licensed DMV Business Partners to charge a service fee in exchange for the convenience, speed, and personal service we provide. The DMV fees themselves go to the state — our service fee covers the cost of operating a DMV-licensed office with trained staff. You always have the option of going to a state DMV office and paying only the state fees.
Document Questions
What ID do you accept?
California driver’s license, California ID card, U.S. passport, passport from another country, and Matrícula Consular. A green card or consular ID is sufficient for most transactions.
I lost my title. Can you still transfer the vehicle?
Yes. We can process a duplicate title and a transfer in the same visit. See our duplicate title page.
What if my renewal notice has incorrect information?
Bring the notice and supporting documents showing the correct information (address change documents, name change order, etc.). We can correct most issues at the same time as your renewal.
Special Situations
My registration is years expired. Can I still renew?
Yes. California has no statute of limitations on expired registration renewals — just increasing penalty fees. We process multi-year expired renewals routinely. See the penalty schedule on our renewal page.
My registration is suspended. Can you reinstate it?
If the suspension is due to a lapse in insurance, yes — bring proof of current insurance and we can often reinstate immediately. Suspensions for unpaid tickets, FTA holds, or other reasons may require resolving the underlying issue first.
I’m active-duty military. Do I need to register in California?
Under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA), active-duty military members can maintain home-state registration while stationed in California. We can file the limited-use exemption — bring a copy of your orders.
Do you handle commercial vehicle registration?
Yes, within DMV jurisdiction. Commercial vehicles with a GVWR over 10,000 pounds may have additional weight, mileage, and CHP inspection requirements — call us at (619) 466-6647 to discuss your specific vehicle.
