If you moved to California, state law gives you 20 days to register your vehicle. Missing the deadline means additional penalties. Here’s the full rundown: what triggers the 20-day clock, what documents you need, how much it costs, and how to get California plates the same day.
What Counts as “Becoming a California Resident”?
California triggers residency when you do any of the following:
- Get a California driver’s license
- Accept in-state employment
- Enroll your children in California schools
- File for a California homeowner’s property tax exemption
- Register to vote in California
Under California Vehicle Code §6700, you must register any vehicle you own within 20 days of establishing residency.
Required Documents
- Original out-of-state title (in your name)
- Current out-of-state registration
- Smog certificate (from a California licensed STAR station)
- VIN verification (we do this on-site for most vehicles)
- Proof of California insurance (15/30/5 minimum)
- Valid California ID or driver’s license
- Weight certificate (pickup trucks and commercial vehicles only)
Typical Total Cost
Registering an out-of-state vehicle in California typically runs $350–$700+ depending on vehicle value and whether use tax applies. Breakdown of fees in our non-resident registration service page.
Military Exception
Active-duty military members stationed in California under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) can keep home-state registration. Bring orders and we’ll file the exemption.
